Uterine luminal prostaglandin F in cycling mares.
Abstract: Prostaglandin F was measured by radioimmunoassay in uterine flushings of cycling mares on days 4, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 post-ovulation. Prostaglandin F was significantly (P less than .05) affected by day of the estrous cycle and reached maximal levels on day 14. Least squares means for days 4, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 were: .66, .81, 4.77, 14.31, 5.48, 3.68 and 2.97 ng/ml, respectively.

The research studied the levels of Prostaglandin F in the uterus of mares during their estrous cycle, showing that the levels peaked on the 14th day after ovulation.
Overview of the Research
The study focused on measuring the levels of Prostaglandin F in the uterus of mares, specifically in the uterine luminal fluid, during different stages of the estrous cycle. The hormone levels were measured on days 4, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 post-ovulation using a scientific method called radioimmunoassay.
Key Findings
- It was discovered that the concentrations of Prostaglandin F varied significantly throughout the estrous cycle (P less than .05), indicating its level is influenced by the stage of the cycle.
- The hormone reached its highest levels on the 14th day post-ovulation.
- The Least-squares means for the levels of Prostaglandin F on days 4, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 post-ovulation were .66, .81, 4.77, 14.31, 5.48, 3.68, and 2.97 ng/ml, respectively.
Significance of the Findings
- The results of the study give insights into the reproductive system of mares. Understanding the levels of Prostaglandin F across the estrous cycle assists in predicting and tracking the reproductive state of mares.
- The peak on day 14 may have key implications on mating as it suggests the optimal time of the mare’s fertility.
- This knowledge could be essentially important for breeders, animal scientists, and veterinarians to better manage mare breeding programs and to undertake interventions if necessary.
