Butyric Acid

Butyric acid, also known as butanoic acid, is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) naturally produced in the hindgut of horses through microbial fermentation of dietary fiber. It is one of the primary energy sources for colonocytes (cells lining the colon) and plays a role in maintaining gut integrity and promoting a healthy gastrointestinal environment.

In equine feed formulations, butyric acid is typically included in the form of protected salts or derivatives (e.g., sodium butyrate or coated butyric acid) to ensure stability and targeted release in the gastrointestinal tract. Its inclusion is aimed at supporting digestive health, especially in the hindgut, by modulating microbial populations and serving as a direct energy source for gut epithelial cells.
