Pinus halepensis invasion in mountain pampean grassland: effects of feral horses grazing on seedling establishment. We evaluated the mechanisms that determine the increasing abundance of Pinus halepensis in mountain pampean grasslands in Argentina that is associated with the continuous presence of feral horses. Relationship of cadmium accumulation to zinc or copper concentration in horse liver and kidney. The concentrations of Cd, Zn, Cu, and metallothionein (MT) in the liver, renal cortex, and renal medulla were determined in 24 male and 15 female younger thoroughbreds (age 27 to 97 months) and two old male horses (age 154 months and 190 months). The effects of natural exposure to high levels of zinc and cadmium in the immature pony as a function of age. To study the effects of environmental exposure to zinc and cadmium in immature foals, five pregnant ponies were raised within 2.9 km of the New Jersey Zinc Smelter in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. The mares and their foals were kept outdoors on timothy hay and orchard grass. The foals were examined daily for signs of illness and blood samples were taken monthly for estimation of serum zinc, copper, and ceruloplasmin levels. Cadmium/zinc relationships in kidney cortex and metallothionein of horse and red deer: histopathological observations on horse kidneys. Cadmium and zinc were determined in kidney cortex of 63 horses and 51 red deer (Cervus elaphus). Cadmium and zinc were also determined in protein fractions obtained by Sephadex chromatography of kidney cortex from 10 horses and 4 red deer. Histopathological parameters in kidney cortex of horses were compared to cadmium content. The metal contents (on wet weight basis) in kidney cortex of the horses were 0.31 +/- 0.22 mmole Cd/kg (range 0.03-1.21) and 0.63 +/- 0.17 mmole Zn/kg (range 0.36-1.23). A comparative study of the effect of triazine herbicides on alcohol dehydrogenases isolated from various sources. The studied herbicides (terbutylazine, simazine) inhibit the activity of plant, animal, and yeast alcohol dehydrogenases. The inhibition constant Ki for alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) isolated from peas and bakers' yeast equals approximately 10(-4) M, and that for ADH isolated from horse liver is of the order of 10(-5) M. The character of inhibition for all the herbicides studied for the reaction catalyzed by pea, liver, and yeast ADH is always noncompetitive toward ethanol and competitive with respect to NAD.
