Antigenic competition among different ‘O’ antigens of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovars during hyperimmunization in pony mares. The present study on antigenic competition among somatic 'O' antigens of different Salmonella groups (A, B, C1, C2, D and E1) in mares revealed that the immune response to most of the antigens was not (A, B, C2) or little (C1, D) affected by antigenic competition. However, E1 group antigen, which induced high antibody titres (Avg. 12967.3) when given alone, produced almost 3.5 log2 lower antibody titres on giving with other antigens, indicating the antigenic competition among some Salmonella group antigens. Effect of caspase inhibitors on the post-thaw motility, and integrity of acrosome and plasma membrane of cryopreserved equine spermatozoa. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that addition of anticaspase cocktails (inhibiting caspases and thus blocking apoptosis) to the extenders increases the post-thaw viability of equine spermatozoa. The addition of caspase inhibitors failed to improve the acrosome and plasma membrane integrity of spermatozoa, suggesting that in equine sperm cryopreservation protocols, the addition of these caspase inhibitors to cryopreservation medium may not be beneficial in protecting the sperm from the stress of cryopreservation.

In vitro propagation of Theileria annulata infected schizonts in different media supplemented with heterologous sera. Efficacy of medium RPMI-1640 (supplied by Gibco USA, Centron and Hi-media) supplemented with horse, donkey, sheep and goat sera was evaluated for in vitro propagation of Theileria annulata (Hisar) infected bovine mononuclear cells. The results were compared with the growth rate in RPMI-1640 supplemented with foetal bovine serum (Gibco). RPMI-1640 (Gibco) proved to be the best medium for in vitro cultivation of the parasite infected cells. Application of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for diagnosis of equine herpes virus-1 (EHV-1). Fifty aborted foetus samples were diagnosed for the presence of equine herpes virus-1 (EHV-1) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. Specific primer pair for amplification of a particular segment of EHV-1 DNA in gc region having 3 Hae III restriction endonuclease sites was used. A 409 base pair segment obtained as PCR amplification product in 9 samples was digested with Hae III to confirm the presence of EHV-1 as the infectious agent in aborted tissues. It was observed that PCR technique was more sensitive, specific and rapid than the conventional virological diagnostic methods.
