Comparative morphological study on the tongue and lingual papillae of horses (Perissodactyla) and selected ruminantia (Artiodactyla). A common characteristic of horses, Rocky Mountain goats, and cattle is that they all have a well developed lingual prominence on the dorsal surface of the posterior area of the tongue. Foliate papillae were found in the horse studied but not in the goat or in cattle. The horse filiform papillae had a long and slender external form with a thin and slender CTC, while in the goat and cattle the external form consisted of a large thick main process and the CTC consisted of a bundle of numerous rod-shaped protrusions. The special papilla found on the lingual prominence resembled larger filiform-lik...
Morphological characteristics and distribution of the autonomic and sensitive innervation of the prostate in some animal species. The sensitive and autonomic innervation of the prostate was studied in some mammals (rat, rabbit, horse, donkey and bull) using gold chloride impregnation. In all the species considered the gland was supplied with conspicuous innervation located in the thickness of the capsule and in trabeculae. The autonomic innervation was constituted by ganglion cells of different sizes (small, medium and large), isolated or in groups of large ganglia also, always located along the course of nerve bundles. The sensitive nervous component, placed more frequently in the most superficial layer of the capsule, ...
Myofibroblasts in the mucosal layer of the uterine tube. Uterine tubes from cow, sheep, horse, pig, dog, cat, rabbit, and guinea pig were examined immunohistochemically for presence and distribution of contractile cells in the mucosal lamina propria. We tested for the presence of alpha-smooth muscle actin, tropomyosin, desmin, smooth muscle myosin (heavy chain) and cytoskeletal proteins vimentin and cytokeratin. Immunostaining for alpha-smooth muscle actin showed two distribution patterns: either positive cells were freely dispersed in the mucosal lamina propria or a distinct subepithelial layer of positive cells was seen. The first distribution pat...
Comparative study of sensitive and vegetative innervation of external and internal anal sphincter muscles in different mammals. Proprioceptive innervation of the external anal sphincter muscle and the organization of the vegetative and sensitive nerve components of the internal and sphincter muscle have been studied in different mammals. The findings of typical muscle spindles in the external anal sphincter muscle were constant in the pig, frequent in the goat and cow, rare in the sheep and horse and absent in the roe and rabbit. In the pig, muscle spindles were observed in the entire extension of the muscle, while in the sheep, goat, cow and horse, the receptors were found only in the cranial portion of the muscle. In...
The pineal body of the mink and horse with special reference to the reproductive cycle. An ultrastructural and immunocytochemical study. An ultrastructural and immunohistochemical analysis was performed on the epiphysis of two species of mammals: mink and horse. These animals present a reproductive cycle that varies along the year according to the light exposition. The aim of the study was to define possible structural changes connected with the gonadal activity. Structural aspects in common emerged such as those in concern with the epiphysis cells, their immunocytochemical characteristics (NSE and Synaptophysin positivity of pinealocytes, as well as CFAP positivity of further cells), and those in concern with the general ultra...
Different fibrillar architectures coexisting in Haversian bone. Samples of compact bone were deproteinated by heat treatment and analysed by SEM. This technique removes very effectively cells and vascular structures and brings into full view the mineralization front along the wall of the Havers canal. The present study was confined to samples of equine bone that are known to be subjected to different functional requirements. Bone subjected to high tensile stress exhibited collagen fibrils substantially aligned with the stress direction, and the vast majority of its osteons appeared made of almost parallel fibrils crossing at very narrow angles. On the cont...
Further observations on the morphology and sensitive innervation of the retractor penis muscle in several species of ungulates. The retractor penis muscle originates from the vertebrae in pigs, horses, cattle and goats; it arises from the rectum in sheep. In all the species considered, sensitive innervation was found. This was represented by encapsulated receptors. Nervous vegetative supply, made up of isolated or assembled ganglion cells, was also present. Among the numerous sensory nerve endings found in pigs, goats and sheep were Pacinian, Pacinian-like, Golgi-Mazzoni corpuscles and Krause's end bulbs (genital corpuscles). Few Pacinian and Pacinian-like corpuscles were found in cattle and horses. A hypothesis on the...
