Insulin responsiveness of sheep, ponies, miniature pigs and camels: results of hyperinsulinemic clamps using porcine insulin. It had been suggested that marked species differences in glucose tolerance tests were due to differences in insulin resistance. To compare insulin responsiveness, euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamps were carried out in sheep, ponies, miniature pigs and camels. Porcine insulin was infused as primed-continuous infusions for 2 h (6 mU x kg(-1) x min(-1)). The steady state glucose infusion rates in the pigs, sheep, ponies and camels were 96.0, 18.6, 7.1 and 6.1 micromol x kg(-1) x min(-1), respectively. The maximal plasma insulin concentrations during the insulin infusions were 2,700 microU x ml(-1...
Skeletal muscle histology and biochemistry of an elite sprinter, the African cheetah. To establish a skeletal muscle profile for elite sprinters, we obtained muscle biopsy samples from the vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius and soleus of African cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus). Muscle ultrastructure was characterized by the fiber type composition and mitochondrial volume density of each sample. Maximum enzyme activity, myoglobin content and mixed fiber metabolite content were used to assess the major biochemical pathways. The results demonstrate a preponderance of fast-twitch fibers in the locomotor muscles of cheetahs; 83% of the total number of fibers examined in the vastus laterali...
Unidirectional fluxes of short-chain fatty acids across segments of the large intestine in pig, sheep and pony compared with guinea pig. Unidirectional fluxes of short-chain fatty acids across pig, sheep and pony caecum, proximal and distal colon were studied under short-circuit current conditions in Ussing chambers. Findings are compared with results from guinea pig. Marked species differences are apparent; highest mucosal-to-serosal fluxes of acetate, propionate and butyrate were seen in guinea pig, lower values in pig and smallest fluxes in sheep and pony. Segmental differences between caecum, proximal and distal colon exist mainly in guinea pig and are less developed in pig, sheep and pony. Inhibition of Na+/H+ exchange by ...
Dynamics of cardiorespiratory function in Standardbred horses during different intensities of constant-load exercise. Six Standardbred horses were used to evaluate the time course of pulmonary gas exchange, ventilation, heart rate (HR) and acid base balance during different intensities of constant-load treadmill exercise. Horses were exercised at approximately 50%, 75% and 100% maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max) for 5 min and measurements taken every 30 s throughout exercise. At all work rates, the minute ventilation, respiratory frequency and tidal volume reached steady state values by 60 s of exercise. At 100% VO2 max, the oxygen consumption (VO2) increased to mean values of approximately 130 ml/kg.min, which ...
