Emericella nidulans as an agent of guttural pouch mycosis in a horse. A case is reported in a 9-year-old Anglo-Arab horse with guttural pouch mycosis caused by Emericella nidulans. Acute death occurred by exsanguination following erosion of the external carotid artery. Histopathological examination of the mycotic plaque demonstrated septate hyphae, conidial heads, hülle cells and mature cleistothecia containing characteristic ascospores. Specific identification was confirmed by culture. In accordance with previous reports, Emericella nidulans should be considered as the major agent of guttural pouch mycosis in Equidae.
Keratomycosis in a Percheron cross horse caused by Cladorrhinum bulbillosum. This report describes an infection of a horse's cornea caused by Cladorrhinum bulbillosum. Minor surgery and treatment with antibiotics successfully resolved the infection. The only previous reported case involving this fungus was an Argentinian boy who was infected while working with horses.
Bone lesions caused by Pythium insidiosum in a horse. A 5-year-old, female saddle horse developed a tumoral mass anterolaterally on the metacarpal region of its right front leg. Histopathological study showed hyaline, aseptate, broad hyphae in the sequestered coral-like necrotic masses. Radiographs revealed an extensive osteomyelitis with disorganized bone proliferation of the metacarpal bones, as well as exostosis of the distal radius and the proximal and distal row of carpal bones. The etiologic agent was detected histologically, isolated in culture and identified as Pythium insidiosum. Serological tests were positive. Immunotherapy was applied...
Phaeohyphomycosis caused by Alternaria alternata in a mare. A phaeohyphomycotic infection caused by Alternaria alternata is reported in a 5-month-old Spanish mare. The diagnosis was made by direct microscopic examination and by repeated isolation of the fungus in culture. This is the first documented case to be reported in Spain.
Pythium destruens sp. nov., an agent of equine pythiosis. The equine phycomycotic agent known commonly as Hyphomyces destruens or occasionally as Pythium gracile, is described as a new species Pythium destruens. Separation is on the basis of morphological features, temperature growth profiles, esterase/lipase activity, and carbohydrate utilization ability. P. diclinum (synonymous with P. gracile sensu Middleton) showed minor differences in vesicle, oospore and oogonium size from P. destruens. P. destruens grew at 40 degrees C on corn meal agar and hydrolysed esters of lauric and oleic acids. These abilities were not displayed by P. diclinum, but this...
