Immunotherapy of cryptosporidiosis in immunodeficient animal models.
The Journal of protozoology    November 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 6 98S-100S
Perryman LE, Bjorneby JM.Immunotherapy for persistent infection caused by Cryptosporidium parvum was attempted in two immunodeficient animal models. BALB/c Athymic (nude) mice were infected with two oral doses of 2 x 10(7) C. parvum oocysts, and subsequently treated with monoclonal antibody (MAb) 17.41 that neutralizes sporozoites and merozoites. Persistent infection was established in all exposed mice. Daily oral treatment with MAb 17.41 for 10 days significantly reduced (p less than 0.005) the number of C. parvum organisms observed by microscopic study of intestinal tracts of infected mice. Young horses with severe ...
Ultrastructural features of Allantosoma intestinalis, a Suctorian ciliate isolated from the large intestine of the horse.
The Journal of protozoology    November 1, 1981   Volume 28, Issue 4 400-405 doi: 10.1111/j.1550-7408.1981.tb05310.x
Sundermann CA, Paulin JJ.Allantosoma intestinalis, a suctorian ciliate isolated from the intestine of the horse, was studied utilizing light and electron optical methods. These small sausage-shaped organisms have a varying number of tentacles (between one and 14) located at each extremity of the body. The microtubular axoneme of each tentacle in cross-section consists of two files of microtubules arranged in a daisy-like configuration. Haptocysts occur in the tentacle shaft, abutted to the plasma membrane of the knob of the tentacle, and in the cell body. The haptocysts are bottle-shaped, with prominent annular striat...
Evidence for Sarcocystis as the etiologic agent of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.
The Journal of protozoology    August 1, 1980   Volume 27, Issue 3 288-292 doi: 10.1111/j.1550-7408.1980.tb04259.x
Simpson CF, Mayhew IG.Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) was diagnosed in 10 horses. By electron microscopy, schizonts were found in intact host cells of the spinal cords or, more frequently, free in the extracellular spaces. Developmental stages of schizonts differed morphologically, and the late stage of schizogony was characterized by endopolygeny. These findings permitted tentative identification of the protozoon as a Sarcocystis sp. Free merozoites were present in the extracellular spaces or in cells of the spinal cord. Pericytes of capillaries were most frequently parasitized by merozoites were present ...
