Abstract: Summary Wetting an area 40 × 40 cm. with water at around 16 °C produces a marked increase in the marginal distance of the horse lung (distance between limits of pulmonary sound and sound of thoracic wall) which persists for an average of 4 1/2 hours. The treated area, but no other area, of skin remains totally refractory for more than 7 hours and partially refractory for more than 28 but less than 46 hours. Phenylbutazone (7 mg./kg. i. v.) prevents the effect. A kininogen-kinin effect is considered the likely explanation. Camphor produced similar changes to those caused by cold water. Zusammenfassung Einnässen einer Hautstelle von 40 × 40 cm mit Wasser (etwa 16 °C) verursacht eine starke Vergrößerung der Marginaldistanz der Pferdelunge, die durchschnittlich 4 1/2 Stunden anhielt. Die behandelte (nicht aber eine andere) Hautstelle bleibt refraktär für diesen Effekt, während mehr als 7 Stunden total, mehr als 28, aber weniger als 46 Stunden partiell. El área cutánea tratada (pero no otra) permanece refractaria para este efecto de forma total durante más de 7 horas, y de forma parcial más de 28, aunque menos de 46 horas.
