Ameloblastic ondontoma in a foal.
Abstract: A 4 month old foal with right sided maxillary enlargement and considerable upper airway obstruction had an ameloblastic odontoma in the right maxillary sinus. This odontogenic tumour, probably congenital in nature, had extensively distorted the structure and contours of the sinus, and displaced the adjacent turbinates and nasal septum.

This research article is about a case study of a 4-month old foal suffering from ameloblastic odontoma, a type of tumor in the right maxillary sinus, causing facial distortion and significant respiratory obstruction.
Introduction
- The article discusses a peculiar case involving a 4-month old foal suffering from an ameloblastic odontoma. This is a type of tumor originating in the dental tissue (odontogenic tumor).
- The foal experienced significant enlargement of the right side of the maxillary (upper jaw), resulting in serious consequences, such as extreme distortion of the facial structure and considerable obstruction of the upper respiratory airway.
Diagnosis & Symptoms
- The foal’s condition was diagnosed as an ameloblastic odontoma located inside the right maxillary sinus. The odontoma is believed to be congenital in nature, meaning it was present at the foal’s birth.
- Particularly alarming symptoms included a conspicuous distortion of the sinus structure and its contours in the face due to the extensive growth of the tumor.
- In addition, the turbinates (small structures within the nasal passage that cleanse and humidify air entering the lungs) and the nasal septum (thin wall of bone and cartilage that separates the two nostrils) were both displaced because of the tumour’s growth.
Significance & Implication
- This research provides valuable insights into a rare and under-studied condition in foals. Understanding the presentation and progression of ameloblastic odontoma can contribute significantly to veterinary medicine.
- This case study is particularly significant because it increases our knowledge of congenital disorders in young animals, the treatment of which can often be challenging due to the animal’s age and development status.
- Lastly, the study emphasizes the importance of early detection and intervention in managing and treating such conditions. Observing symptoms such as facial asymmetry or respiratory difficulty in young animals could help in the early detection of potentially serious conditions like an ameloblastic odontoma.
