Anthelmintic efficacy fenbendazole paste in equines.

The research examined the effectiveness of fenbendazole (a medication) in treating various species of equine (horse) intestinal worms.

Objective of the Research

The main objective of the research was to evaluate the efficacy of a single oral dose of fenbendazole paste, at 7.5 mg/kg of a horse’s body mass, against various types of intestinal worms found in equines.

Methodology

• The research was carried out on 5 horses initially.
• Each of the horses was administered a single oral dose of fenbendazole paste at 7.5 mg/kg body mass.
• The effectiveness of this medication was then assessed against adult intestinal worms of various genera including Cyathostomum, Cylicostephanus, Cylicondontophorus, Poteriostomum, Cylicocyclus, Triodontophorus, Oesophagodontus and others belonging to the subfamily Cyathostominae.
• The efficacy of the medication against adults of specific worm species, namely, Oxyuris equi, Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus equinus and Probstmayria vivipara was also evaluated.

Results

• The study found that fenbendazole was highly effective against the adult worms of the various genera mentioned above.
• Similarly, it showed high efficacy against adults of the specific worm species including Oxyuris equi, Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus equinus and Probstmayria vivipara.
• These results were further confirmed in an additional sample of 12 horses.
• In the larger sample, fenbendazole was also found to be highly effective against additional worm species: Parascaris equorum, Craterostomum and Gyalocephalus.

This research establishes fenbendazole as a highly effective medication for controlling various species of intestinal worms in horses.
