Antibody responses after vaccination against equine influenza in the Republic of Korea in 2013.

Abstract: In this study, antibody responses after equine influenza vaccination were investigated among 1,098 horses in Korea using the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay. The equine influenza viruses, A/equine/South Africa/4/03 (H3N8) and A/equine/Wildeshausen/1/08 (H3N8), were used as antigens in the HI assay. The mean seropositive rates were 91.7% (geometric mean antibody levels (GMT), 56.8) and 93.6% (GMT, 105.2) for A/equine/South Africa/4/03 and A/equine/Wildeshausen/1/08, respectively. Yearlings and two-year-olds in training exhibited lower positive rates (68.1% (GMT, 14) and 61.7% (GMT, 11.9), respectively, with different antigens) than average. Horses two years old or younger may require more attention in vaccination against equine influenza according to the vaccination regime, because they could be a target of the equine influenza virus.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

This research article investigates the efficacy of vaccinations against equine influenza in horses in Korea, and found lower than average positive rates in yearlings and two-year-olds in training.

Introduction and Methodology

  • The paper is focused on examining the antibody responses in horses against equine influenza vaccination in Korea. Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease in horses.
  • The researchers utilized the Hemagglutination Inhibition (HI) assay to measure the level of antibodies in 1,098 horses. The HI assay is a technique used for the serological detection and measurement of antibodies against viruses.
  • Two different types equine influenza viruses, A/equine/South Africa/4/03 (H3N8) and A/equine/Wildeshausen/1/08 (H3N8), were used as antigens in the assay.

Results

  • The study found that the mean seropositive rates among all horses were 91.7% for the A/equine/South Africa/4/03 virus and 93.6% for the A/equine/Wildeshausen/1/08 virus.
  • The Geometric Mean Titre (GMT) was used to express the average antibody level among seropositive horses. The GMT was 56.8 for the A/equine/South Africa/4/03 virus and 105.2 for the A/equine/Wildeshausen/1/08 virus.
  • The results showed that yearlings (young horses between 1 and 2 years old) and two-year-old horses in training exhibited lower positive rates. The rates were 68.1% (GMT, 14) and 61.7% (GMT, 11.9) respectively, with different antigens.

Conclusion

  • The conclusion indicates that horses two years old or younger may require additional attention in the vaccination regime against equine influenza.
  • This is because they could be a potential target of the equine influenza virus owing to their lower positive rates of antibodies in their system, suggesting lesser immunity against the disease.
  • This study contributes to the understanding of equine influenza vaccination efficacy and provides insights on age-sensitive vaccination strategies in horses.
