Arthrodesis of the scapulohumeral joint in a miniature horse.
Abstract: Scapulohumeral arthrodesis was performed successfully as treatment for severe degenerative arthritis in a 62-kg miniature horse. Using an approach similar to that used for a dog, this horse's scapulohumeral joint was opened, the cartilage was removed, and the site was stabilized, using an 11-hole narrow dynamic compression plate. Fusion was uncomplicated. The stallion became a successful pasture-breeding animal.

This research paper discusses a successful procedure of scapulohumeral arthrodesis performed on a miniature horse suffering from severe degenerative arthritis. The surgical method, typically used for dogs, involving the removal of cartilage from the scapulohumeral joint and utilizing an 11-hole narrow dynamic compression plate for stabilization, led to uncomplicated fusion and converted the horse into a successful pasture-breeding animal.
Methods
- The surgical procedure, called scapulohumeral arthrodesis, involved operating on the horse’s scapulohumeral joint which is located between the shoulder blade (scapula) and the humerus (upper arm bone).
- This procedure, which is generally performed on dogs, was adapted for use on a horse. The surgery began by opening the joint and then removing the degraded cartilage.
- Following the removal of the cartilage, the surgical site was stabilized. An 11-hole narrow dynamic compression plate (a specialized orthopedic device) was used for this purpose.
Results
- The horse’s recovery from the scapulohumeral arthrodesis was uncomplicated, suggesting the procedure was successfully performed.
- Following the surgery, the horse was not only able to function normally, but also became a successful breeder in pasture conditions.
- This successful treatment case highlighted the potentially wider applicability of the scapulohumeral arthrodesis procedure, which is traditionally employed in dogs, can also be adapted for use in larger animals including horses.
Conclusion
- Accomplishing scapulohumeral arthrodesis in the miniature horse denotes a significant breakthrough, presenting a compelling treatment option for severe degenerative arthritis in horses.
- The procedure, which was executed without complications, resulted in a marked improvement in the horse’s quality of life, allowing it to become a successful breeder in pasture conditions.
- This successful adaptation of the surgical procedure typically used for dogs heralds a promising stride in the veterinary surgical fields- potentially opening up further opportunities for treating larger animals with similar skeletal issues.
