Arthrodesis of the talocalcaneal joint for the treatment of two horses with talocalcaneal osteoarthritis.
Abstract: Two horses with lameness due to tolocalcaneal osteoarthritis that failed to respond to conservative management were treated by tolocalcaneal arthrodesis using cortex screws placed in lag fashion. The affected joint of one horse was arthrodesed by compressing and stabilizing the medial facet of the joint with three screws. In the second horse, the medial and lateral facets of the affected tolocalcaneal joint were each compressed and stabilized with two screws. The lameness of both horses improved markedly following surgery.

The research article presents a study where two horses suffering from talocalcaneal joint osteoarthritis, a condition that caused them serious discomfort, were successfully treated using a surgical method called talocalcaneal arthrodesis.
Overview of the Study
- The study examined the effectiveness of talocalcaneal arthrodesis procedure in treating two horses that were suffering from talocalcaneal osteoarthritis and weren’t responding well to conservative treatments.
Methodology and Procedure
- The talocalcaneal arthrodesis surgery involved the use of cortex screws, which were placed in a “lag fashion”. Arthrodesis refers to the surgical fusion of a joint, in this case, the talocalcaneal joint, in order to reduce pain and improve stability.
- The procedure varied a little between the two horses; for one of them, the team compressed and stabilized the medial facet of the joint (the internal side of the joint) by inserting three screws. In the case of the second horse, both the medial and lateral (the external side of the joint) facets were compressed and stabilized, but with two screws each.
Results and Outcome
- Following the surgery, the authors noted a marked improvement in the condition of the horses. They observed reduction in lameness, suggesting that the surgical intervention was successful in managing the effects of talocalcaneal joint osteoarthritis in horses.
Implications of the Study
- This study provides evidence that arthrodesis of the talocalcaneal joint could be certain effective treatment for horses suffering from talocalcaneal osteoarthritis, especially when conservative management options fail. This procedure could offer valuable insight to both veterinarians and horse owners striving to maintain the health and performance of horses diagnosed with this condition.
