BIEC2-808543 SNP in the LCORL Gene is Associated with Body Conformation in the Yili Horse.
Abstract: Recently, a SNP (BIEC2-808543) was demonstrated to be associated with equine body size in horses. In this study, we genotyped BIEC2-808543 SNPs in 314 Yili horses in order to evaluate the association between genotype and body composition traits, such as body weight, withers height, chest circumference, and cannon circumference. Results indicate significant associations between polymorphisms of this SNP and body conformation in Yili horse populations. Based on these results, we hypothesize that BIEC2-808543 is strongly related to body conformation of Yili horses and has the potential to be used for marker-assisted selection.

This research article explores the connection between a particular SNP (BIEC2-808543) and body composition traits in Yili horses. It suggests the SNP could be used as a marker for selective breeding purposes due to its significant association with horse body size.
Introduction to the Research
- The research revolves around a specific Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP), also known as BIEC2-808543. An SNP is a change in a single nucleotide in a gene which can impact the individual’s traits. This specific SNP was previously shown to be associated with the body size of horses.
- The study focuses on Yili horses, a breed prevalent in the Yili Valley in China, known for their strength and endurance. The researchers wanted to further investigate the connection between the SNP and body composition traits in these horses.
Research Methods
- The researchers genotyped the BIEC2-808543 SNP in 314 Yili horses. Genotyping is the process of determining which genetic variants an individual possesses.
- They examined the relationship between genotypes, the genetic information and constitution of an organism, and various body composition traits. These traits included body weight, withers height (the shoulder height), chest circumference, and cannon circumference (the area around the horse’s lower leg).
Key Findings
- The study results revealed significant associations between the polymorphisms of this SNP and body conformation in the Yili horse population. Polymorphisms refer to variations in the DNA sequence that are common in the population.
- The aforementioned associations suggest that the BIEC2-808543 SNP is strongly related to body conformation in Yili horses.
Potential Implications
- Given these findings, the SNP could potentially be used for marker-assisted selection in horse breeding. This is a method of selecting desirable traits based on identified genetic markers associated with these traits rather than on the phenotype expression of the traits.
- The ability to select for certain body composition traits could be useful in purposes such as horse racing or show-jumping where specific physical traits are desirable.
