Bilateral diffuse cystic renal dysplasia in a 9-day-old Thoroughbred filly.

Abstract: A 9-day-old Thoroughbred filly was presented for diarrhea and lethargy. Diagnostic test results were compatible with severe renal dysfunction. Diffuse cystic lesions of both kidneys were identified on ultrasonographic examination. Postmortem examination confirmed the presence of multiple renal cysts. Congenital nephropathy compatible with bilateral diffuse cystic renal dysplasia was diagnosed.

This research describes a case of a nine-day-old Thoroughbred filly who was diagnosed with a severe renal disorder, specifically bilateral diffuse cystic renal dysplasia, after presenting symptoms of lethargy and diarrhea.

Case Presentation and Initial Assessment

  • A Thoroughbred filly, only nine days old, was brought in due to symptoms of diarrhea and lethargy. These clinical signs raised immediate concerns about a serious health problem that warranted thorough diagnostic examination.

Diagnostic Process

  • To determine the cause of the filly’s symptoms, several diagnostic tests were conducted. These tests revealed that the filly was suffering from severe kidney dysfunction, indicated by the abnormal parameters in the tests.
  • An ultrasonographic examination was carried out to further explore the condition of the kidneys. This imaging procedure unveiled the presence of diffuse cystic lesions in both kidneys. Having cystic lesions scattered throughout the kidney tissue is a worrying sign of potential serious kidney disease.

Postmortem Examination and Final Diagnosis

  • Following the filly’s death, a postmortem examination was conducted which confirmed the presence of numerous cysts in the kidneys. Multiple renal cysts are abnormal pouches containing fluid that occur within the kidneys and severely impact kidney function.
  • Based on the identified health abnormalities and pathological manifestations, a final diagnosis of congenital nephropathy compatible with bilateral diffuse cystic renal dysplasia was made. This is a rare, severe kidney disorder that is present from birth and is characterized by the development of widespread cysts in both kidneys resulting in severe kidney dysfunction.
