Building an Oral Endoscope for Use in Equine Oral Examination and Treatment.
Abstract: The use of oral endoscopy can be very beneficial in that it helps the clinician to perform a more thorough oral examination. However, due to the high cost, most commercially available equine oral endoscopy systems have been out of reach for clinicians who practice equine dentistry outside a large hospital setting. This article details how to set up an oral endoscopy system that can be used on equine patients either in an ambulatory practice or in a hospital setting. The system is more cost-effective than most other systems currently on the market without sacrificing functionality or image quality. The oral endoscope can be wirelessly integrated with a handheld tablet device or larger monitor for real-time viewing of images. It also has the ability to obtain high-resolution digital images and videos that can be easily incorporated into the patient's medical record. Incorporation of this system into equine practices has the potential to provide improved care for dental patients and to help overcome some of the inherent challenges of equine dentistry.

The research paper discusses the development of a cost-effective oral endoscopy system for horses that offers high-quality imaging and is suitable for use in a variety of settings, including ambulatory practices and large hospitals.
Need for Affordable Oral Endoscopy Systems in Equine Dentistry
- The research highlights the benefits of oral endoscopy in conducting thorough mouth examinations in horses. Despite the advantages, there’s a lack of affordable endoscopy systems suitable for equine dentistry, particularly for vet practitioners operating outside major hospital setups.
- Endoscopy systems offer real-time visual access to the oral cavity, aiding in accurate diagnosis and treatment. However, their high cost has limited accessibility and use, especially among small-scale or mobile veterinary practitioners.
Designing an Affordable and Efficient Oral Endoscopy System
- To tackle this problem, the researchers discuss building a new, more affordable oral endoscopy system. The focus of the study is to create a solution that will be equally effective as the expensive options on the market without compromising on functionalities or image quality.
- This cost-effective endoscope is designed to wirelessly connect with handheld devices like tablets or larger monitors. This allows for real-time viewing of images which can speed up the process of diagnosis and treatment.
High-Resolution Imaging and Record Integration
- The proposed system also comes equipped with the ability to capture high-resolution digital images and videos. Practitioners can easily incorporate these into the medical records of the patient.
- Such a feature enhances the comprehensiveness of the patient’s health record and can aid future treatment processes.
Implications and Potential Benefits
- The researchers hypothesize that incorporating this affordable and functional system into equine practices could potentially improve the standard of care for dental patients.
- Moreover, the system could help overcome some routine challenges faced in equine dentistry, such as lack of visualization tools, financial constraints and the need for mobile diagnostic equipment.
