Caecocaecal and caecocolic intussusceptions associated with larval cyathostomosis in four young horses.
Abstract: This report describes the clinical and pathological features of 4 horses affected by caecocaecal or caecocolic intussusceptions associated with larval cyathostomiasis. In each case, there was clinical and/or pathological evidence of concurrent larval cyathostomosis. They all demonstrated variable signs including diarrhoea, pyrexia, weight loss and subcutaneous oedema and cyathostome larvae were identified in the faeces of 3 of the horses. These cases highlight the need to consider caecal intussusceptions as a possible complication in horses affected by larval cyathostomosis, especially where signs of abdominal pain are severe or persistent.

The research article focuses on investigating the symptoms and implications of caecocaecal and caecocolic intussusceptions, conditions associated with larval cyathostomosis, as seen in four horses. The findings highlight the need to consider these intussusceptions as potential complications in horses suffering from larval cyathostomosis, asserting that such complications can be identified when the signs of abdominal pain are either severe or persistent.
Overview of the Research
- The research revolves around a detailed study of four young horses showing signs of caecocaecal or caecocolic intussusceptions in correlation with larval cyathostomosis. These conditions involve the invagination or ‘telescoping’ of a section of the intestine into another section, which can lead to severe complications such as abdominal pain, obstructions, or even potentially life-threatening conditions.
Clinical and Pathological Features
- The most commonly observed signs in these horses were diarrhoea, pyrexia (fever), weight loss and subcutaneous oedema (fluid buildup under the skin). These symptoms are often associated with larval cyathostomosis, an infestation by parasitic worms.
- On a pathological level, cyathostome larvae were identified in the faeces of three of the four horses. This provided substantial evidence that their symptoms were linked to an ongoing parasitic infestation.
Implications and Consequences
- The findings of this study underscore the need to consider caecal intussusceptions, whether caecocaecal or caecocolic, as a potential complication in horses affected by larval cyathostomosis.
- A noteworthy observation was that abdominal pain, in particular, if severe or persistent, could be indicative of such complications. Hence, early identification and appropriate treatment of such conditions can be critical in managing the overall health and well-being of the horses.
Concluding Remarks
- This research highlights the importance of comprehensive knowledge about larval cyathostomosis and its potential complications in horses. Understanding the symptoms and knowing what to look for can help in early detection and treatment, thereby mitigating serious health risks.
