Cardiac/Cardiovascular Conditions Affecting Sport Horses.
Abstract: Cardiac murmurs are not uncommonly detected in the equine athlete. Although most are benign in nature, differentiation and quantification of murmurs due to valvular regurgitation are important for prognosis and recommendations. Arrhythmias can be associated with structural disease or occur independently and may range in severity from minimal clinical effect to poor performance to presenting a safety risk to rider and horse. This article discusses commonly encountered cardiac conditions in the sport horse. Physical examination, diagnostic approach, valvular disease, and arrhythmias with an impact on performance or ridden safety are discussed.

The research explores the different cardiac problems that often affect sport horses, their diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. It particularly focuses on murmurs due to valvular regurgitation and arrhythmias, their impact on the horse’s performance, and how they can pose safety risks to both the horse and its rider.
Discussion of Cardiac Conditions in Sport Horses
The research discusses commonly encountered cardiac conditions in horses, specifically those used in sports.
- One key topic of focus is cardiac murmurs in horses. These are relatively common observations during an equine health check-up. The study emphasizes that while the majority of these murmurs are benign and don’t have significant consequences for the horse, there are some due to valvular regurgitation which represent more serious conditions. These require further investigation to understand their seriousness and potential impact on the horse’s health and performance.
- Arrhythmias, another form of cardiac conditions, are also a topic of investigation in the research. Arrhythmias, disorders of the heart rate or rhythm, can happen due to structural disease in the heart, or they can occur independently of other health issues. Arrhythmias have varying impacts, from no noticeable effects on the horse’s health to impacting performance or presenting safety risks for both horse and rider.
Diagnostic Approach and Physical Examination
The paper also delves into the approach for diagnosing these cardiac conditions in sport horses.
- Physical examination of the horse is the initial step in diagnosing cardiac conditions. This typically involves listening to the horse’s heart, typically with a stethoscope, to detect any irregularities or murmurs.
- For more complex cases, additional diagnostic tools or techniques may be used, such as echocardiography, which uses sound waves to create images of the heart, or electrocardiography, which measures electrical activity in the heart.
Valvular Disease and Its Impact
Further, the paper touches on the impact of valvular diseases on sport horses.
- Valvular diseases often lead to murmurs which affect the functioning of the heart. This makes physical tasks harder for the horse and can reduce their performance in sports. Also, severe forms of valvular diseases can pose significant health risks to the horse.
Arrhythmias and Their Relevance
Lastly, the study discusses the issue of arrhythmias in sport horses.
- Arrhythmias can variably influence a horse’s sports performance, from not having any discernible impact to resulting in poor performance. In the latter case, the horse’s ability to participate in sports may be hindered.
- In extreme cases, arrhythmias could potentially pose safety risks to both the rider and the horse. For instance, cardiac arrhythmias could lead to sudden unexplained falls during riding, endangering the rider and possibly causing injury to the horse.
