Caudal cruciate ligament function and injury in the horse.
Abstract: The caudal cruciate ligament assists the medial femorotibial ligament in supporting the medial aspect of the femorotibial joint. It also limits the outward rotation of the tibia during weight bearing. In two lame horses tearing of the caudal portion of the femoral attachment of the caudal cruciate ligament was recorded together with cracking and tearing of the medial meniscus. In one case, synovitis and restrictive fibrous periarthritis were the sequelae of secondary stifle sepsis.

The research examines the role of the caudal cruciate ligament in horses, and how damage to it affects their movement and health. Cases involving ligament tearing, medial meniscus injury and follow-on issues like synovitis and periarthritis were explored.
Understanding the Caudal Cruciate Ligament
- The caudal cruciate ligament is examined in this study, notable for its role in supporting the medial aspect of the femorotibial joint in horses. It essentially helps in securing the connection between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone) within the joint.
- Beyond just support, it also constricts the outward rotation of the tibia when the horse is bearing weight, hence aiding stability and overall locomotion.
Injury to the Caudal Cruciate Ligament and Subsequent Impacts
- The paper recorded two cases of horses that were rendered lame, i.e., unable to walk properly, due to tearing of the caudal portion of the femoral attachment of the caudal cruciate ligament. This effectively implies a failure in the structural integrity of the connection between the femur and the tibia.
- Along with the ligament tearing, one of the notable symptoms that surfaced was cracking and tearing of the medial meniscus. The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that provides a cushion between the femur and tibia. Any damage to it can consequently result in pain, swelling and issues with mobility in the knee joint.
Development of Secondary Conditions
- In one case described in the research, subsequent health problems developed in the form of synovitis and restrictive fibrous periarthritis. Synovitis refers to the inflammation of the synovial membrane, which lines the joints. It usually results in pain and swelling around the joint.
- On the other hand, restrictive fibrous periarthritis is a form of joint disease where fibrous tissue forms around a joint leading to restricted specific joint motions and it tends to occur as a consequence of another, primary condition.
- These conditions are mentioned as being a sequela, or a secondary result, of what is referred to as secondary stifle sepsis. Essentially, an initial infection (sepsis) in the stifle joint (which is equivalent to the human knee) could have led to these subsequent health issues.
