Cecal vascular hamartoma causing recurrent colic in an Arabian mare.
Abstract: A 5-year-old mare was treated for recurrent colic and weight loss by surgical removal of an intraluminal cecal mass. Microscopic examination revealed vascular hamartoma. A 6-month follow-up showed an improvement in the general condition of the mare. Vascular hamartoma should be one of the differential diagnoses for weight loss and colic.

This research paper discusses the case of a 5-year-old Arabian mare who was treated for recurrent colic and weight loss through the surgical removal of an intraluminal cecal mass that was identified as a vascular hamartoma. The horse showed significant improvement six months after the surgery.
Detailed Explanation of the Research
- In this study, a unique case of a young Arabian mare suffering from recurrent colic and weight loss was investigated. The mare had a mass in the cecum part of her large intestine. The horse’s condition was severe as it suffered from recurring bouts of abdominal pain, also known as colic, and had noticeable weight loss. Colic is particularly significant in equine medicine due to the horse’s physiology, which unlike humans, cannot vomit or regurgitate food and hence can suffer from severe abdominal pain.
- The researchers chose to perform surgical excision of the cecal mass to treat the mare’s condition. The mass was intraluminal, which means it was inside the lumen or the inside space of the cecum, a part of the large intestine. The mass was blocking the passage which possibly led to the recurrent colic and malnutrition leading to weight loss.
- After the removal of the mass, it underwent a microscopic examination that revealed it to be a vascular hamartoma. A hamartoma is a benign tumor-like mass composed of an overgrowth of mature cells and tissues normally present in the affected part, but often with one element predominating. In this case, it was vascular indicating an overgrowth of blood vessels.
- The study followed the mare’s progress for six months after her surgery. The mare showed marked improvement in her general condition. This indicates that the surgical removal of the cecal mass was successful in relieving the recurring colic and improved the mare’s ability to gain and maintain weight.
- The research emphasizes that vascular hamartoma should be considered as one of the possible differential diagnoses in cases of weight loss and colic. Differential diagnosis involves distinguishing a particular disease or condition from others that present similar clinical features. The identification of this uncommon cause can help equine practitioners diagnose and treat similar cases in the future.
