Comparison of the Occurrence of Transportation-associated Fever in 2 Years Old Thoroughbreds before and after Introduction of Prophylactic Marbofloxacin Administration.

Abstract: In order to reveal the preventive effect of marbofloxacin (MRFX) administration just before transportation, we compared the occurrence of transportation-associated fever before and after introduction of MRFX administration. After the introduction of prophylactic MRFX administration, the rectal temperatures of horses after transportation were significantly lower than before the introduction of MRFX administration (P<0.01) and the number of febrile horses was significantly lower than before the introduction of MRFX administration (P<0.01). In conclusion, these results show that prophylactic MRFX administration just before transportation is clinically effective at preventing transportation-associated fever.

The research article evaluates the effectiveness of administering marbofloxacin as a preventative measure against transportation-associated fever in 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses by comparing incidences of the condition before and after its application.

Objective and Methodology

  • The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of prophylactic marbofloxacin (MRFX) administration in preventing transportation-related fever in 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses.
  • The researchers compared the occurrence of transportation-related fever in the horses before and after the introduction of MRFX administration. Marbofloxacin is an antimicrobial agent that is often used in the treatment of bacterial infections.
  • The main indicator of fever used was the rectal temperatures of horses post-transportation. The comparison was made by comparing the number of febrile horses as well as their rectal temperatures.

Results

  • The research found that after the introduction of prophylactic MRFX administration, the rectal temperatures of horses post-transportation were significantly lower than before the introduction.
  • Additionally, the number of horses registering a fever after transportation was significantly lower post-introduction of MRFX than before.
  • The results were statistically significant, with a P-value less than 0.01. Typically, a P-value less than 0.05 is considered statistically significant, indicating that the results are not due to random chance but reveal an actual effect of the drug administered.

Conclusion

  • The results of the study show that prophylactic administration of MRFX just before transportation is clinically effective in preventing transportation-associated fever in 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses.
  • This finding suggests that marbofloxacin could be used as a preventative measure to lower the risk of transportation-associated fever in such horses, potentially optimizing their health and performance during travel.
