Complete Genome Sequence of a Burkholderia mallei Isolate Originating from a Glanderous Horse from the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Abstract: Burkholderia mallei is a zoonotic agent causing glanders, a notifiable disease in equines. During the past decades glanders emerged, and the Kingdom of Bahrain reported outbreaks to the World Organization of Animal Health in 2010 and 2011. This paper presents the complete genome sequence of the Burkholderia mallei strain 11RR2811 Bahrain1.

The article presents the entire genetic map of a species of Burkholderia mallei, a bacteria causing a globally recognised equine disease called glanders, isolated from a Bahraini horse during the disease outbreak in 2010 and 2011.
Background
- The paper revolves around Burkholderia mallei, a bacterium known for causing glanders, a disease that typically affects horses and is noticeable by international animal health bodies.
- The Kingdom of Bahrain had notified the World Organization of Animal Health about glanders outbreak twice, in 2010 and 2011. The study involves a strain of Burkholderia mallei isolated during this outbreak.
Methodology and Findings
- Researchers focused on obtaining the complete genome sequence of the Burkholderia mallei strain that originated during this Bahrain outbreak, called 11RR2811 Bahrain1.
- A genome sequence is a full list of the nucleotides that make up all the DNA in an organism, it essentially is the organism’s entire genetic code.
- Sequencing the genome of disease-causing organisms like Burkholderia mallei aids in understanding how the bacteria function, their evolution, and how they cause disease. This information can be invaluable in managing or preventing further outbreaks of the disease they cause.
Conclusion
- This research advances our understanding of the Burkholderia mallei bacterium and potentially provides valuable data for prevention and management strategies against glanders, especially in regions where the disease seems to be emerging.
