[Contribution of equine therapy in the management of post-traumatic stress disorder].
Abstract: For several years, animal-mediated therapies have been used in the treatment of psychiatric patients. Post-traumatic stress disorder has the particularity of being generated by an external event in a person a priori free of mental pathology. In this disorder, various so-called targeted psychotherapies have proven to be effective, including equine therapy.

The research explores the effectiveness of animal-mediated therapies, specifically equine therapy, in the treatment of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition usually triggered by an external event in a generally mentally healthy individual.
Introduction
The study focuses on animal-assisted therapy, a burgeoning and efficacious approach in psychiatric treatment. It specifically delves into the use of equine therapy to manage post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a unique condition as it’s usually initiated by an external incident in an individual that doesn’t have any preexisting mental condition.
Animal-Mediated Therapies
- This research highlights that animal-mediated therapies have been deployed for years to treat psychiatric patients. These therapies involve the use of animals as a part of the individual’s therapeutic process; the animals often provide a nonjudgmental presence, companionship, and physical contact, which can all contribute to an individual’s healing process.
- The study mentions that among these animal-mediated therapies, equine therapy (therapy involving horses) has shown promise in treating certain mental health disorders.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Equine Therapy
- PTSD is distinguished by its origination; it arises from an external shock or traumatic event in a person who is usually free of any mental health issues. It may cause symptoms including flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, uncontrollable thoughts about the event, emotional distress, and physical symptoms like a racing heart or sweating.
- The paper mentions that various specific psychotherapies have been effective in treating PTSD and equine therapy has been highlighted as one of them. Equine therapy involves interactions between a patient and a horse, which are supervised by a qualified therapist. The therapy may include care of the horse, grooming, feeding, leading the horse, and even riding the horse. These activities are designed to develop confidence, self-efficiency, communication, trust, and perspective-taking.
- Through this study, researchers aim to underline the potential benefits of equine therapy in managing PTSD, making it a viable add-on to the therapeutic procedures for patients diagnosed with this disorder.
