Cosmetic globe surgery in the horse.
Abstract: Effects of traumatic injury or inflammation on the equine eye can be catastrophic. These ocular conditions can frequently result in blindness or chronic pain. In addition to blindness and pain, permanent unsightly cosmetic defects can occur. This article addresses options available for improved cosmetic outcome in horses with ocular scars or requiring enucleation. Many of these options have been described in detail previously. New information has been added to the discussion of each option where pertinent.

This research article explores the options for cosmetic globe surgery in horses with eye conditions that have led to blindness, chronic pain, and aesthetic defects. The paper includes previously known treatments and introduces new information where relevant.
Study Overview
- The study focuses on trauma or inflammation-induced ocular conditions in equines (horses) that often lead to devastating outcomes such as blindness, chronic pain, and unsightly permanent cosmetic defects.
- It presents options available for enhancing the cosmetic outcome in horses with scars on the eye or those requiring enucleation (removal of the eyeball). These options aim to restore the natural appearance of the horse’s eye and improve the affected horse’s quality of life.
Cosmetic Globe Surgery in Horses
- Eye conditions in horses such as trauma or inflammatory diseases can cause severe ocular damage. This often leads to significant dysfunction, including blindness or chronic pain. Additionally, these conditions can cause unsightly permanent cosmetic defects influencing the aesthetic appeal of the horse.
- This research involves curative strategies for horses with ocular scars or those needing enucleation. The goal of these strategies is not just to eliminate pain or restore functionality but also to improve the eye’s appearance.
New Information and Previous Studies
- Several of the discussed options are already known in the veterinary surgical field. However, in this paper, these strategies have been further explored, and new pertinent information is included.
- This updated information provides a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge base to veterinary surgeons, equine caretakers, and owners for an improved understanding and implementation of cosmetic globe surgery solutions in horses.
