Current Use of Equine Laparoscopy in Urogenital Disorders: A Scoping Review of the Literature from 2000 to 2021.
Abstract: (1) Background: Laparoscopic surgery replaced traditional invasive techniques for the treatment of common urogenital disorders in equids. The aim of this review is to evaluate applications and the development of urogenital laparoscopy from 2001 to 2021. (2) Methods: A scoping review of literature was undertaken according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines for scoping reviews on three databases (NCBI-PubMed, Web of Science-Thompson Reuters, and SciVerse Scopus). (3) Results: A total of 452 papers were identified. After duplicate removal and title screening, 181 papers underwent abstract screening. Of these, 160 + 10 papers (cited by others) were assessed for eligibility according to the PICOs. A total of 132 papers were considered eligible. Most of the research was focused on ovaries and testes, followed by urinary bladder and general articles about laparoscopy in horses. We identified 43 original studies (33%, RCT, NoRCT, and experimental trials), 39 case series/retrospective studies (29%), 37 case reports (28%), and 13 reviews (10%, narrative or systematic). (4) Conclusions: Gonadal disorders were the most investigated. Hand-Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery (HALS) and laparoscopic-assisted surgery represent valuable options for more challenging conditions (uterine and urinary bladder disorders).

Summary
This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The research article provides a comprehensive examination of the applications and progress of urogenital laparoscopy in equines conducted from the year 2001 to 2021. It uses laparoscopic surgery as a less invasive alternative to traditional techniques for the treatment of urogenital disorders in equines.
Background
- Urogenital laparoscopy, a less invasive surgical method for addressing disorders in the urogenital tract of equines, has progressively replaced traditional surgical approaches. The paper delivers a systematic review of the scope, usage, and development of this technique spanning two decades from 2001 to 2021.
Methods
- The researchers implemented a scoping review process of the existing literature on the subject in line with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines for scoping reviews.
- This was carried out by searching through three major databases: NCBI-PubMed, Web of Science-Thompson Reuters, and SciVerse Scopus.
Results
- Out of 452 identified papers, the researchers extracted 181 unique papers after removing duplicates and conducting title screening.
- Afterwards, abstract screening was reconducted and 170 papers (160 initial plus 10 cited by others) were evaluated for eligibility under the PICOs guidelines.
- The research determined that 132 of these papers were suitable for use in this review.
- Most of the researches under review focused on topics regarding the ovaries and testes, trailed by the urinary bladder and general articles concerning laparoscopy in equines.
- The researchers categorized the papers and identified 43 original studies (including RCT, NoRCT, and experimental trials), 39 case studies or retrospective analyses, 37 case reports, and 13 reviews (either narrative or systematic).
Conclusions
- Laparoscopic surgery in equines was mostly utilized for addressing gonadal disorders as shown by the significant number of papers focusing on these areas.
- Equine laparoscopy techniques such as Hand-Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery (HALS) and laparoscopic-assisted surgery have shown promising results in treating more complex disorders, particularly in the uterine and urinary bladder.
