• Further to identifying this shared epitope, researchers discovered its physical location within the bacterial structure. They found that the epitope exists on a peptide structure within the bacterium. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins.
• Interestingly, they also determined that the outer surface of the bacteria was without this epitope. This evidence is crucial as it helps to understand how this bacterium interacts with its environment and infects its hosts.

Behavior of The Epitope Towards External Influences

• To further explore the nature of this epitope, various agent tests were carried out. Results from Western blotting, a common laboratory technique used for detecting specific proteins in a sample, revealed the peptide structure housing the epitope to be vulnerable to denaturing and reducing agents.
• Denaturing agents disrupt the normal alpha-helix and beta-sheets in a protein and transforms it into a random shape. Reducing agents, on the other hand, interferes with its chemical structure. This denaturation and reduction can result in the loss of function or change in behavior of the protein.
