Diagnosis of small intestinal intussuception by transabdominal ultrasonography in 2 adult horses.

Abstract: Transabdominal ultrasonography is frequently used to diagnose small intestinal intussusceptions in foals. We demonstrate that transabdominal ultrasonography also provides a rapid and accurate diagnosis of small intestinal intussusception in adult horses. A detailed description of the ultrasonographic appearance is provided.

The research paper talks about how transabdominal ultrasonography (a kind of diagnostic imaging technique) is effectively used for diagnosing intestinal issues, specifically small intestinal intussusceptions, in adult horses.

Introduction

  • The paper defines small intestinal intussusception as a condition where a part of the intestine “telescopes” into another part, leading to an obstruction. This is a common issue observed in neonatal foals, as well as adult horses.
  • The authors highlight how this condition is often diagnosed with the use of transabdominal ultrasonography, a non-invasive imaging technique, regularly used for similar diagnoses in foals.

Methodology

  • This research study focuses on the application of transabdominal ultrasonography in diagnosing small intestinal intussusceptions in adult horses.
  • The study thus takes two adult horses with suspected cases of intussusception and uses transabdominal ultrasonography for diagnosis.

Findings

  • The paper discusses the findings of the study, demonstrating that transabdominal ultrasonography can indeed provide a quick and accurate diagnosis of small intestinal intussusceptions in adult horses.
  • The study emphasizes the accuracy of the procedure and presents a comprehensive description of how the ultrasonographic results look when this particular intestinal issue is present.

Conclusion

  • The results show how transabdominal ultrasonography is just as effective in diagnosing small intestinal intussusceptions in adult horses as it is in foals.
  • Thus, this technique can be used as a valuable tool for diagnosing bowel issues in larger equine animals, helping to provide timely medical intervention.
