Diagnostic value of contrast echocardiography in the horse.
Abstract: M-mode echocardiography is a safe and practical means of using ultrasound to evaluate the dynamic movements of cardiac structures. The technique can be refined by using a simple contrast medium in the form of carbon dioxide mixed with heparinised blood to provide a strong echogenic result. This technique was employed in a series of 15 normal conscious standing horses and in three animals with specific cardiac defects. In the clinical cases it was possible to confirm the diagnosis and differentiate between a congenital septal defect and mitral regurgitation. The method was found to be safe and relatively simple to perform using percutaneous insertion of catheters. The intracardiac catheterisation was trouble free and no clinical side effects to direct injection of the carbon dioxide contrast medium into the heart were demonstrated.

The research article discusses the use of M-mode echocardiography, enhanced by a contrast medium, for diagnosing heart conditions in horses, demonstrating its efficacy and safety.
Introduction
- The research paper discusses a study on the application and diagnostic value of M-mode echocardiography in horses.
- Echocardiography is an ultrasound-based non-invasive technique used to examine the functioning of the heart and its chambers.
- The study revolves around M-mode echocardiography, a specific type of echocardiography that records the movement of cardiovascular structures, thus allowing for an in-depth assessment of heart conditions.
Use of Contrast Medium
- In this research, the scientists refined the echocardiography technique by introducing a contrast medium consisting of carbon dioxide mixed with heparinised blood.
- This contrast medium is used to provide a stronger and clearer echo image, thus improving the diagnostic accuracy of echocardiography.
Study Design
- The enhanced echocardiography technique was tested on a sample of 15 normal, conscious, standing horses and three horses with notable cardiac defects.
- In clinical cases, the contrast-enhanced echocardiography allowed differentiation between congenital septal defects and mitral regurgitation – two types of heart disorders.
Findings
- The study found M-mode echocardiography, with the use of a contrast medium, to be a safe, effective, and easily executable procedure for diagnosing heart conditions in horses.
- The study reported no side effects or complications arising from direct injection of the carbon dioxide contrast medium into the horse’s heart, making it safe for usage.
- Delivery of the contrast agent was achieved through percutaneous insertion of catheters, a process which was trouble-free and simple, according to the research.
