Diagnostics and Treatments in Chronic Diarrhea and Weight Loss in Horses.
Abstract: Chronic diarrhea in the horse is defined as diarrhea present for more than several days with little if any improvement. The diagnosis and treatment of horses with chronic diarrhea usually present a great challenge to the clinician. There are many limitations to treatment of these patients given the limited numbers in which a final diagnosis can be achieved. The lack of knowledge of the alterations of horse microbiota during chronic diarrhea and the multiplicity of causes also make treatment challenging. A poor prognosis is often attached to chronic diarrhea, particularly in cases with neoplasia and inflammatory bowel disease.

This research discusses the complexities in diagnosing and treating horses experiencing chronic diarrhea and associated weight loss, given the limitations in reaching a conclusive diagnosis and understanding of the changes in the horse’s microbiota during this disease cycle.
Overview of Chronic Diarrhea in Horses
- Chronic diarrhea in horses, described as diarrhea sustained for more than several days without significant improvement, is a significant health challenge for practitioners due to its diagnostic and treatment complexity.
- This difficulty is partly attributed to the limited number of cases where a final diagnosis can be achieved. Hence some cases of chronic diarrhea in horses remain poorly understood.
Challenges in Diagnosing Chronic Diarrhea
- One of the primary challenges in diagnosing chronic diarrhea in horses is the limited understanding of the horse’s microbiota transitions throughout the disease process. The microbial community in a horse’s gut can drastically shift during sickness, and these changes can affect the course of the disease and overall outcome. However, such alterations are not well studied or understood in the context of chronic diarrhea.
- The array of potential causes for chronic diarrhea also complicates the diagnostic process since various diseases and conditions could lead to similar symptoms.
Treatment Complications and Prognosis
- The aforementioned limitations and complexity in diagnosing the condition also affect the treatment processes, given the treatment depends significantly on understanding the root cause of the disease.
- The prognosis for chronic diarrhea in horses is generally unfavorable, specifically for cases associated with neoplasia (a condition which abnormal tissue growth, commonly referred to as tumors, occur) and inflammatory bowel disease. These diseases often result in severe symptoms and complications, contributing to the overall poor prognosis.
