Effect of a novel rice fermented extract on gastric ulcers in horses.
Abstract: Gastric ulcers cause appetite loss, poor body condition, and colic in horses. This study investigated the protective effect of a rice fermented extract on the gastric mucosa in 17 healthy Thoroughbreds. For one month, horses in the rice fermented extract (nine horses) and control (eight horses) groups were orally administered a rice fermented extract (100%; 0.2 ml/kg, SID) and tap water (0.2 ml/kg), respectively. Gastric endoscopic images were obtained before and one month after rice fermented extract administration. The gastric ulcer score was lower after administration (median, 1; maximum, 2; minimum, 1) than before administration (median, 4; maximum, 4; minimum, 3) in the rice fermented extract group (P<0.05). In conclusion, the administration of a rice fermented extract for one month improves gastric mucosal lesions in Thoroughbreds with gastric ulcers.

The research involved the study of the potential protective effect of a rice fermented extract on gastric ulcers in horses, and it was concluded that administration of the extract for one month improves gastric mucosal lesions in horses affected with gastric ulcers.
Methodology
- The study involved a sample size of 17 healthy Thoroughbred horses.
- The horses in the study were divided into two groups: One group was administered a rice fermented extract, and the other was used as a control group and given tap water.
- The experiment ran for one month, during which the horses in the extract group were orally given the rice fermented extract at a measurement of 0.2 ml/kg once daily and the control group was given tap water at the same measurement.
- Gastric endoscopic images were obtained both before and after the month-long experiment for an accurate comparison of the effects on the horse’s gastric mucosa.
Results
- The study recorded a decrease in gastric ulcer scores in the horses administered the rice fermented extract after the set period. On scale measurement, the gastric ulcer score dropped to a median of 1 compared to the pre-treatment median score of 4, with 1 and 2 being the minimum and maximum scores respectively.
- The reduction in scores was significant enough to suggest that the administration of the rice fermented extract was beneficial in improving gastric mucosal lesions in Thoroughbred horses with gastric ulcers.
Conclusion
- The administration of the rice fermented extract has a positive effect on gastric ulcers in horses.
- The extract helps in improving the condition of gastric mucosal lesions in Thoroughbreds, thus proving to be potentially beneficial in preventing or reducing gastric ulcers in these animals.
- However, it’s important to consider that the study was focused on a specific breed of horses, and thus the effectiveness of this extract on other breeds remains to be comprehensively explored.
