[Endometrial cysts in the mare. 2. Clinical studies: occurrence and significance].
Abstract: Endometrial cysts were found in 11 (13.4%) of 82 mares of various breeds by clinical examinations. Endometrial cysts were diagnosed by hysteroscopy and ultrasonic echography. Typical images are described. The importance of endometrial cysts is discussed with regard to differential diagnosis of early pregnancy and uterine pathology. There was no evidence of cysts in mares under 10 years of age. Mares with endometrial cysts had a 10% higher history of disturbed fertility than mares without endometrial cysts. Seven of nine mares with cystic structures in the uterus became pregnant. Endometrial cysts could be recognized together with embryonic vesicles and pregnancies continued without any complications. They were found as well after parturition in the post partum uterus.

The study discusses the incidence and impacts of endometrial cysts in mares. It indicates that these cysts are found in 13.4% of various breeds of mares mostly above 10 years and could influence fertility rates by 10%. However, mares with cysts can still successfully gestate and give birth.
Methodology
- The researchers conducted clinical examinations on 82 mares of different breeds.
- Endometrial cysts were identified through hysteroscopy and ultrasonic echography, with the researchers providing descriptions of the typical images seen.
Findings
- Endometrial cysts were noted in 11 of the 82 mares, giving a 13.4% occurrence rate.
- No cysts were found in mares below 10 years, indicating an age factor in the onset of these growths.
- Regarding fertility, mares with these cysts had a 10% higher history of fertility problems compared to those without the cysts.
- Despite these fertility problems, seven of the nine mares with cystic structures in their uteri became pregnant, suggesting that conception and gestation could progress even in the presence of endometrial cysts.
- The cysts could be observed together with embryonic vesicles and didn’t interrupt ongoing pregnancies.
- Even after giving birth, these cysts were still found in the postpartum uterus.
Implication
- This study shows that endometrial cysts are not uncommon in mares, especially those aged above 10 years.
- Despite potentially causing some fertility disturbances, these cysts do not prohibit conception and pregnancy, with mares able to carry pregnancies to term without complications.
- The presence of these cysts even postpartum indicates that they might be persistent and likely wouldn’t disappear after birth.
In conclusion, while endometrial cysts do present some potential fertility issues, they seem not to completely prevent pregnancy or its progression in mares. Their cause, development process, and any potential health implications beyond fertility are areas for future research.
