Endoparasites of horses from the Formiga city, located in center-west region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Abstract: With the aim of studying the endoparasite fauna of horses from the Formiga city, located in center-west region of the state of Minas Gerais, 25 animals that were naturally infected with helminths were evaluated. By means of parasitological necropsies, different endoparasites were found. The subfamily Cyathostominae presented the highest incidence, followed by Trichostrongylus axei, Oxyuris equi, Triodontophorus serratus, Strongyloides westeri, Strongylus edentatus, Habronema muscae, Parascaris equorum, Probstmayria vivipara, Strongylus vulgaris, Gasterophilus nasalis, Anoplocephala magna and Anoplocephala perfoliata. In the present study, if the species Probstmayria vivipara was not considered in the prevalence, the frequency of Cyathostominae was equivalent to 94.85%. The results obtained in this study allowed us to detect and identify different species of helminths in horses, and confirmed the high incidence of nematodes belonging to the subfamily Cyathostominae in the center-west region of Minas Gerais.

The research article focuses on the study of endoparasites, particularly helminths, in horses from the Formiga city in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Their findings reveal that Cyathostominae type of these parasites was found to have the highest incidence among horses.

Research Background and Aim

  • With the focus on veterinary parasitology, this research aimed to study the variety and prevalence of endoparasites (parasites that live inside the host) in horses from the Formiga city.
  • Specifically, the study sought to ascertain the species of parasitic helminths, a group of parasites including worms, that were infecting the horses.

Methodology

  • 25 horses naturally infected with helminths were chosen for the evaluation.
  • The team used parasitological necropsies (post-mortem examinations to study parasite presence and disease impact) to discover and identify different endoparasites.

Findings

  • The research study found several species of endoparasites. Among these, the subfamily Cyathostominae showed the most significant prevalence.
  • Other parasites identified were Trichostrongylus axei, Oxyuris equi, Triodontophorus serratus, Strongyloides westeri, Strongylus edentatus, Habronema muscae, Parascaris equorum, Probstmayria vivipara, Strongylus vulgaris, Gasterophilus nasalis, Anoplocephala magna and Anoplocephala perfoliata.
  • If Probstmayria vivipara was excluded from the prevalence analysis, the percentage of Cyathostominae incidence stood at a high 94.85%.

Conclusion

  • The findings of this study determined the variety of helminth species in horses in the surveyed area and confirmed the high prevalence of Cyathostominae subgroup nematodes.
  • This research contributes to the understanding of the parasitic threats that horses in this region face and suggests the need for effective de-worming measures and regular health monitoring.
