Endoscopic examination of the equine thorax.
Abstract: PLEUROSCOPY is a diagnostic technique in which a flexible
or rigid endoscope is used to examine the pleural space.
Although pleuroscopy is a relatively new technique in equine
medicine, it has been used for some time in human medicine
(Jacobaeus 1910, 1925; Lloyd 1953). It is most often used in
human patients to explore the thoracic cavity of persons with
undiagnosed pleural effusions when more conservative
methods, such as percutaneous lung or pleural biopsy, have
been unsuccessful in providing a diagnosis (Hatch and
Decamp 1966; Decamp, Mosely, Scott and Hatch 1973;
Gwin et a1 1975; Landa 1981). A lesion can be biopsied once it
is seen and any post biopsy haemorrhage can be controlled
(Ben-Isaac and Simmons 1975; Williams and Thomas 1981).
Horses with suspected intrathoracic lesions such as
pulmonary or pleural abscesses, masses and adhesions and
mycotic lesions can be examined. Previous radiographic and
diagnostic ultrasound examinations are used to select the
proper intercostal space for entry to the thoracic cavity.

The study discusses pleuroscopy, a diagnostic technique that involves the use of an endoscope for examining the pleural space, particularly its utility and application in equine medicine when diagnosing thoracic conditions in horses.
Overview of Pleuroscopy
- Pleuroscopy is a technique that involves the use of an endoscope, which can be flexible or rigid, for examining the pleural space in the thoracic cavity.
- While it is a relatively recent addition to equine medicine, it has been a common practice in human medicine for a considerable length of time.
- For human patients, it is typically used for investigating the thoracic cavity in cases where individuals have undiagnosed pleural effusions, specifically when conservative methods like percutaneous lung or pleural biopsy are unable to provide a diagnosis.
- Once a lesion has been spotted through pleuroscopy, it can be biopsied and any bleeding after the biopsy controlled.
Pleuroscopy in Equine Medicine
- The technique can be employed for examining horses that are suspected to be afflicted with intrathoracic lesions. This could be conditions like pulmonary or pleural abscesses, adhesions, masses, and fungal lesions.
- Past radiographic and diagnostic ultrasound exams are typically utilized for determining the best point of entry into the thoracic cavity via the intercostal space.
