Epididymal swelling attributable to generalized lymphosarcoma in a stallion.
Abstract: Aspermia was diagnosed in a 12-year-old Thoroughbred stallion with generalized lymphosarcoma. Invasion of the epididymus by neoplastic cells caused thickening and enlargement of both epididymes. The testes were not affected. The nodular ultrasonographic architecture was similar to that in previously reported cases of infectious epididymitis.

The study relates to a case where a 12-year-old Thoroughbred stallion experienced Aspermia, a condition marked by the absence of sperm in the semen. Researchers diagnosed generalized lymphosarcoma, a form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, as the cause of the swelling in the epididymis, a tube located at the back of the testicles that stores and carries sperm.
General Overview
- The stallion in the study presented with aspermia, which is a condition where no sperm is present in the semen. This is typically a symptom of a larger health issue.
- Upon investigation, the stallion was diagnosed with generalized lymphosarcoma. This is a widespread form of cancer that invades the lymphatic system, which is a critical part of the body’s immune system.
Epididymal Involvement
- The researchers found that the lymphosarcoma had invaded the epididymis of the stallion. The epididymis is a long, coiled tube located on the backside of the testicles. Its function is to transport and store sperm cells that are produced in the testes.
- Invasion by neoplastic, or cancerous, cells caused both epididymes to become thickened and enlarged. It was, however, noted that the testes themselves were not affected.
Ultrasonographic Findings
- The researchers used ultrasonography, a diagnostic imaging technique, to visualize the structure of the infected epididymes.
- The imaging revealed a nodular architecture, meaning it had multiple small growths or nodules. This nodular architecture was similar to what has been previously reported in cases of infectious epididymitis, which is inflammation of the epididymis typically caused by a bacterial infection.
Concluding Notes
- This study provides important information on the potential effects of generalized lymphosarcoma in stallions. The development of aspermia, along with the specific involvement of the epididymis while sparing the testes, can be vital in diagnosing similar cases in the future.
- Further, the similarity in ultrasonographic findings between infectious epididymitis and epididymal lymphosarcoma may highlight a potential challenge in differential diagnosis. Doctors would need to consider cancer as a potential cause of epididymal swelling even in the presence of a nodular architecture typically indicative of infection.
