Equine herpesvirus 1: characterisation of the first strain isolated in Colombia.

Abstract: This paper describes the isolation and characterisation of equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) in Colombia. The virus was isolated from a nasal swab and an aborted foetus of a pregnant mare imported from Argentina, with clinical signs of rhinopneumonitis. The new strain was characterised through culture and morphological, serological and immunocytochemical studies. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA restriction maps revealed an EHV-1 1P genome. This is the first report on the isolation and characterisation of EHV-1 in Colombia.

This study presents the detection and detailed examination of the equine herpesvirus 1 infection in Colombia, marking the first ever instance of such virus being isolated and studied in the country.

Isolation of the Virus

  • Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1), which is known to cause respiratory disease in horses, was discovered in a horse in Colombia. This is reportedly the first such instance of the virus in the country.
  • This virus was found in a nasal swab, as well as an aborted foetus, from a mare horse that had been imported from Argentina. The horse demonstrated obvious signs of rhinopneumonitis, an infectious disease causing inflammation of the nasal mucous membranes.

Characterization of the Virus

  • The researchers conducted a detailed study to understand this specific strain of the virus. This characterization was done using several methods, including culture, morphology, serology, and immunocytochemical studies.
  • Morphological study involves observing the physical appearances of the virus particles under a microscope while serological study investigates the behaviour of the virus in the host’s blood, especially its interactions with elements of the immune system.
  • Immunocytochemical studies examine the interactions of the virus with cells of the immune system at a molecular level. This can provide insights into how well the immune system can identify and attack the virus.

Identification of the Virus

  • The researchers used advanced techniques to identify the specific strain of EHV-1 coming from the horse. They performed a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), which is a common method used to create multiple copies of a section of DNA for studying.
  • Next, a DNA restriction map was generated. This is a map of known restriction sites, or recognised DNA sequences, within a sequence of DNA. This map confirmed that the genome of the virus belonged to the EHV-1 1P strain.

To sum up, through isolating and characterizing this specific strain of EHV-1 from a horse in Colombia, these findings contribute to our broader understanding of this virus and how it may develop and spread. This initial discovery in Colombia could pave the way for further studies and better measures for disease control related to EHV-1 in the country.
