Equine leptospirosis with some clinical observations.
Abstract: In a serologic survey on equine leptospirosis in Egypt, the following incidences of leptospiral serosensitivity were found: 1. Hospitalised horses 65/113 (57.5 %). 2. Hospitalised donkeys 90/125 (72.0 %). 3. Apparently healthy horses 21/72 (29.1 %). Sera of these animals were mostly reacting to serotypes butembo, pomona, icterohemorragiae, and grippotyphosa. Equine in Egypt are close animals to humans and may constitute a potential source of leptospiral infection. From the clinical point of view, it is very possible that ocular, hoof lesions and icterus in equines would be expected with leptospiral titres.

The research examines the prevalence of leptospirosis, a bacterial disease, in horses and donkeys in Egypt and suggests that it may potentially spread to humans. It also links the disease to certain symptoms in these animals such as vision problems, hoof lesions, and jaundice.
Background on Leptospirosis
- Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect both humans and animals, caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira.
- The disease can cause a variety of symptoms and may lead to serious complications if not treated effectively.
- In this study, the focus is on leptospirosis in equines (horses and donkeys), which are often in close contact with humans, thus posing a potential risk of cross-species transmission.
Survey on Equine Leptospirosis
- In the serological survey conducted, the incidences of leptospiral serosensitivity (ability to react to leptospira antigens) were measured in hospitalised horses, hospitalised donkeys, and apparently healthy horses.
- Results showed that 57.5% of hospitalised horses and 72.0% of hospitalised donkeys were serosensitive to leptospirosis.
- In contrast, the rate of serosensitivity among apparently healthy horses was significantly lower at 29.1%.
Leptospira Serotypes Identified
- The study found that the sera of these animals were predominantly reacting to four leptospira serotypes: butembo, pomona, icterohemorragiae, and grippotyphosa.
- Serotypes are distinct variations within a species of bacteria or viruses. In this context, these serotypes designate distinct variations of Leptospira bacteria that the animals’ immune systems were responding to.
Associated Clinical Symptoms in Equines
- The research also noted a possible connection between equine leptospirosis and certain clinical symptoms in horses and donkeys.
- It suggested that ocular problems (vision-related issues), hoof lesions (damage to the hoof), and icterus (jaundice) could be indicative of the disease in these animals.
- This raises the potential for diagnostic markers to aid in early detection and treatment of leptospirosis in equines.
