Equine respiratory disease on the Western Canadian racetracks.
Abstract: The serological results from this study clearly show that both equine influenza and equine rhinopneumonitis viruses were present during spring and autumn epidemics of respiratory disease on Western Canadian racetracks. Approximately 11% of the horses showed significant convalescent titres to influenza while 9% showed significant convalescent titres for equine viral pneumonitis. It was noted in our study a positive vaccination history corresponded with a reduction in the severity of the respiratory infection.

This research study reveals that both equine influenza and equine rhinopneumonitis viruses were evident during outbreaks of respiratory disease on Western Canadian racetracks during the spring and fall seasons. The study also suggests that vaccinations for these diseases can reduce the intensity of the respiratory infections.
Introduction and Methodology
- The researchers conducted a serological study with the aim of investigating the presence and impacts of equine influenza and equine rhinopneumonitis viruses, which cause respiratory diseases in horses.
- These diseases were specifically examined during respiratory disease outbreaks on Western Canadian racetracks in the seasons of spring and fall.
- Serological studies involve the analysis of blood serum, typically for the presence of specific antigens or antibodies, thereby helping in the detection of diseases.
Findings
- The examination of horse blood serum revealed crucial information about the prevalence of these diseases. They found that about 11% of the horses showed significant convalescent titres to influenza and about 9% of the horses showed significant convalescent titres for equine viral pneumonitis, which is also known as equine rhinopneumonitis.
- Convalescent titres refer to the increased level of antibodies that are found in the blood following an infection. Hence, these results indicated that a significant number of horses had been infected by these diseases.
Vaccination and Severity of Infection
- A remarkable observation from the study was the correlation between a horse’s positive vaccination history and the severity of the respiratory infection.
- The results suggested that horses that had been appropriately vaccinated showed a reduction in the seriousness of the disease symptoms compared to horses that weren’t vaccinated.
Conclusion
- The findings of this study are critical as they highlight the prevalence and probable consequences of respiratory diseases, specifically equine influenza and equine rhinopneumonitis, in horses on Western Canadian racetracks.
- More importantly, the study underscores the benefits of proactive measures, like vaccination, in mitigating the adverse effects of these diseases among the horse population.
