Analyze Diet

[Ethical and analytical problems in man and greater mammals].

Abstract: Toxicomania and doping give rise to an increasing number of drug measurements in the body fluids. Consequently the analysts have to face, at one and the same time, ethical and analytical problems. Should the analyst participate to investigations organised in order to disclose a toxicomania in a working place? The author suggests a positive answer as long as the adduct person benefits to a social and medical care. What is the analytical meaning of a positive test? Taking into account the increasing sensitivity of the methods used, thresholds have to be established, at least for the blood concentrations of the licit drugs, in order to avoid asserving the legality to the sensitivity of the apparatus.

The research article discusses the ethical and analytical challenges faced by analysts in the light of increased drug measurements in body fluids due to toxicomania and doping, and emphasizes the need to establish thresholds for blood concentrations of licit drugs.

Ethical Challenges in Drug Testing

  • The author highlights the rising issue of toxicomania and doping, resulting in increased drug testing within body fluids. This trend lays the groundwork for both ethical and analytical problems.
  • One key ethical dilemma is whether analysts should participate in investigations aimed at uncovering toxicomania in workplaces. The author suggests that cooperation in such investigations is acceptable, provided the identified individuals receive appropriate social and medical support.

Analytical Problems in Drug Testing

  • The author identifies an analytical challenge that comes with the increased sensitivity of drug testing methods. Due to the high sensitivity, even small concentrations of certain substances can trigger a positive result.
  • The critical concern here is that the increase in sensitivity might lead to the law serving the apparatus’ sensitivity rather than the other way round. Thus, the author posits that setting thresholds, especially for legal drugs, is indispensable to ensure the legality is not unduly influenced or dictated by the methods’ sensitivity.

Establishing Thresholds for Licit Drugs

  • The author argues for the establishment of thresholds for blood concentrations of legal drugs as a solution to the above-mentioned problem. This measure would help in distinguishing between acceptable quantities of such substances and those that are indicative of misuse or abuse.
  • By setting these thresholds, analysts can better interpret positive test results. It would strengthen the legality and credibility of such tests, ensuring they are not merely products of method’s sensitivity, but rather valid indicators of potential drug misuse.
