Evaluation of inferior check ligament desmotomy for treatment of acquired flexor tendon contracture in the horse.
Abstract: The usefulness of inferior check ligament desmotomy as a treatment for acquired tendon contracture in horses was evaluated in 13 cases of deep digital flexor (DDF) contracture and in 3 cases of combined superficial digital flexor (SDF) and DDF contracture. In 8 of 9 cases of DDF contracture in which the dorsal surface of the hoof had not passed beyond being vertical to the ground, the surgical procedure was successful in returning the limb to a normal position and function. Compared with DDF tenotomy, inferior check ligament desmotomy was a superior treatment technique because of decreased postoperative pain, better postoperative appearance, and improved return to function. In 4 cases of DDF contracture in which the dorsal SDF contracture was also involved, inferior check ligament desmotomy was generally insufficient to allow return of the limb to normal alignment and function.

The research article assesses the efficiency of a surgical procedure called inferior check ligament desmotomy used to treat tendon contracture, a condition that limits the movement of the limbs, in horses.
Understanding the Key Terms and the Subjects of Study
- The term ‘inferior check ligament desmotomy’ refers to a surgical procedure that involves severing the inferior check ligament in the leg of a horse, which is often performed to correct issues related to tendon contractions.
- The study examined this procedure’s effectiveness in curing tendon contracture, a condition where the tendons shrink and limit the flexibility of a horse’s limb, particularly focusing on two kinds of tendon contractures: deep digital flexor (DDF) contracture and combined superficial digital flexor (SDF) and DDF contracture.
Research Methodology and Major Findings
- The researchers evaluated the effectiveness of inferior check ligament desmotomy on 13 horses suffering from DDF contracture and 3 horses with combined SDF and DDF contracture.
- The study found that in 8 out of 9 DDF contracture cases where the dorsal surface of the hoof hadn’t passed beyond a vertical position to the ground, the surgical procedure was successful in restoring the limb’s normal stance and function. This indicates the effectiveness of the procedure in cases where the condition has not severely progressed.
- The procedure also proved superior to another treatment technique known as DDF tenotomy due to reduced postoperative pain, better postoperative appearance of the horse, and improved return to normal limb function.
- However, in cases of DDF contracture where SDF contracture was also present, the procedure didn’t prove completely effective in returning the limb to normal alignment and function. This suggests that in more severe cases, where multiple tendons are contracted, additional treatment methods may be needed.
