Evaluation of vascularization in the walls of preovulatory follicles in mares with endometritis.
Abstract: Endometritis is a major cause of infertility in mares. The aim of this study is to evaluate the preovulatory follicle (POF) vascularization (A mix, A red, A blue), POF diameter, POF wall thickness, and uterine diameters in mares with or without endometritis. Ten healthy mares and 10 mares with endometritis diagnosed by the combination of transrectal palpation, ultrasonographic examination, and cytology brush were enrolled in the study. Data of the groups obtained at 2 days before the ovulation (day -2) were compared with Student's t-test. Correlations of the parameters were determined by the Pearson correlation test. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report indicating a lower vascularization of A mix, A red, A blue, and a significantly lower wall thickness in the POFs of the mares with endometritis compared to the healthy ones (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, p = 0.06, and p < 0.001, respectively). Also, a striking and novel inverse correlation between POF wall thickness and uterine diameter (r = -0.785, p < 0.001) and moderate correlations between POF wall thickness and POF vascularizations of A mix and A red (r = 0.436, p = 0.055, and r = 0.427, p = 0.060, respectively) were determined.

This research study delves into the issue of infertility in mares caused by endometritis, exploring the differences in vascularization and other factors in the walls of preovulatory follicles between healthy mares and those suffering from this disease. The findings demonstrated decreased vascularization and wall thickness in affected mares, as well as revealing intriguing correlations between wall thickness, uterine diameter, and vascularizations.
Objectives and Methodology
- The researchers aimed to evaluate the characteristics of preovulatory follicles (POF) in mares, specifically focusing on vascularization, diameter, wall thickness, and uterine diameters. This was targeted at understanding the impacts of endometritis, a key cause of infertility in mares.
- The research was conducted on two groups: Ten healthy mares and ten mares diagnosed with endometritis. The diagnosis involved transrectal palpation, ultrasonographic examination, and cytology brush.
- Data collected two days before the ovulation (day -2) was analyzed and compared using a Student’s t-test. Furthermore, correlations between the gathered parameters were deduced via the Pearson correlation test.
Key Findings
- The research is groundbreaking in that it reveals a significant reduction in vascularization and wall thickness in the POFs of mares suffering from endometritis, as compared to their healthy counterparts.
- The stats show that the decreased vascularization of A mix, A red, A blue, and decreased wall thickness were substantial (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, p = 0.06, and p < 0.001, respectively).
- Another novel insight discovered was an inverse correlation between POF wall thickness and uterine diameter (r = -0.785, p < 0.001). Also, moderate correlations were determined between POF wall thickness and POF vascularizations of A mix and A red (r = 0.436, p = 0.055, and r = 0.427, p = 0.060, respectively).
Conclusion and Significance
- This research provides key insights into how endometritis in mares affects the vascularization and structural attributes of preovulatory follicles. This could be instrumental for veterinary practitioners and researchers to better understand and tackle endometritis-induced infertility issues in mares.
- The discovered correlations could help in improving diagnosis and determining the severity of the endometritis. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of these correlations could lead to effective treatment strategies.
