Fatty acid composition of equine erythrocytes.
Abstract: Fatty acid composition of erythrocytes of healthy horses was determined. Three fatty acids (C16:0, C18:0, and C18:1) were found in approximately equal quantities and comprised 72.17% of the total. Nine other fatty acids were found in small amounts. Saturated fatty acids constituted 67.2% of the total. Marked variation was demonstrated in the occurrence and distribution of fatty acids in the sterol ester, triglyceride, phospholipid, and free fatty acid fractions.

The researchers investigated the types and distribution of fatty acids found in the red blood cells (erythrocytes) of healthy horses.
Overview of Research
- This research focuses on determining the fatty acid composition of erythrocytes of healthy horses. Erythrocytes, also known as red blood cells, are important components of blood and have key roles in transporting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.
- Fatty acids are key elements of all cell membranes and more specifically, within erythrocytes, they contribute to maintaining cell integrity and function.
Fatty Acid Composition Found
- Three types of fatty acids namely C16:0, C18:0, and C18:1 were identified. These were present in almost equal amounts and made up 72.17% of the total fatty acids. The nomenclature represents the length of the carbon chain and the number of double bonds present in the fatty acids respectively.
- In addition to these, they were able to identify nine other fatty acids in smaller quantities. The specific identities and quantities of these fatty acids were not specified in the abstract.
Fatty Acid Categories
- Saturated fatty acids were found to constitute 67.2% of all the detected fatty acids. These are types of fatty acids that feature single bonds between carbon atoms, thereby making them more ‘saturated’ with hydrogen atoms as compared to their unsaturated counterparts which host one or more double bonds in their structure.
Variation of Fatty Acids
- A significant variation was noted in the presence and distribution of fatty acids in different lipid molecules including sterol ester, triglyceride, phospholipid, and free fatty acid fractions. Each of these lipid molecules plays a unique role in cell structure and function, and contain different kinds of fatty acids. Understanding how their distribution occurs might have implications for how these lipid molecules work and contribute to cell performance and health.
