Fetal electrocardiography in the mare as a practical aid to diagnosing singleton and twin pregnancy.

Abstract: Fetal electrocardiography (FECG) in the mare has been investigated by several workers (Holmes and Darke 1968, Kanagawa and others 1967). This short paper seeks to evaluate previous work, present new findings, and provide a practical technique enabling veterinary surgeons to diagnose singleton and twin pregnancies in the latter part of pregnancy.

The research article discusses the use of fetal electrocardiography (FECG) in horses as a practical tool to differentiate between singleton and twin pregnancies in the later stages of gestation.

Introduction

  • The paper begins by acknowledging the work of previous researchers in the field of fetal electrocardiography (FECG) in horses, specifically citing the work of Holmes and Darke (1968), and Kanagawa and other researchers (1967).
  • The authors intend to assess the already existing knowledge, showcase their own findings and present a hands-on method to the veterinary community.

Fetal Electrocardiography (FECG)

  • FECG is a way of monitoring the heart rate and rhythm of the fetus inside the womb of the mother.
  • This method holds significant promise in horses because it allows for early detection and differentiation between singleton (one foal) and twin (two foals) pregnancies. Early detection and management of twin pregnancies can prevent complications that might arise due to the limited space in the mare’s uterus.

Purpose of Research

  • The research aims to develop a practical technique that is applicable in real-world veterinary practice, rather than just a theoretical academic approach.
  • This technique can complement existing diagnostic tools and contribute to improved equine reproductive health.
