Fusion of the distal sesamoid and distal phalanx in a yearling colt.
Abstract: This paper describes a rare malformation of the distal portion of the left foredigit of a 15-month-old half-bred colt which was severely lame. Radiological, pathological and tomographic studies revealed hypoplasia of the metacarpophalangeal skeleton, absence of the distal sesamoid and deformation of the distal phalanx. Morphological analysis of the lesion and computerised measurement of the width of the articular surface of the distal phalanx suggested an early fusion between the distal sesamoid and distal phalanx.

This research article explains a unique case study of a young colt with a malformed foredigit that showed signs of severe lameness. The study discovered that the malformation was due to an early fusion between the distal sesamoid and distal phalanx bones in the colt’s leg.
Research Context
- The research focuses on the case study of a 15-month-old half-bred colt.
- The colt exhibited severe lameness, which triggered further examination and the study.
Diagnosis and Findings
- Various diagnostic techniques like radiology, pathology, and tomographic studies were used to examine the colt’s condition.
- The examinations revealed several anomalies in the colt’s foredigit. The key issues discovered include hypoplasia of the metacarpophalangeal skeleton, absence of the distal sesamoid, and deformation of the distal phalanx.
- Hypoplasia refers to an underdeveloped or incomplete development of a tissue or an organ. In this context, it’s the underdevelopment of the metacarpophalangeal skeleton that is part of the colt’s forelimb structure.
- The distal sesamoid, a bone found in the horse’s foot was absent, which is an uncommon occurrence.
- The distal phalanx, the bone at the toe of the horse was also observed to be deformed.
Anomaly Explanation
- Morphological analyses of these anomalies and precise measurement of the distal phalanx’s articular surface using computer technology were conducted to explain the deformities.
- The investigation suggested an early fusion of the distal sesamoid and distal phalanx. This fusion is believed to have caused the deformation and the subsequent lameness in the colt.
- Fusion of bones at an early developmental stage can lead to improper or hindrance in the growth of the bones, which seems to have occurred in this case.
Conclusion
- The findings indicate a rare type of malformation, potentially caused by an early fusion of the distal sesamoid bone with the distal phalanx.
- This research adds valuable information to equine bone malformations, which could be beneficial in future diagnoses and treatments for similar conditions in horses.
