[Genetic research in the field of reproductive pathology and genetic prophylaxis in agricultural animals in the Socialist Republic of Romania].
Abstract: The paper presents the results of some genetic studies accomplished in Romania in the field of pathology of reproduction in domestic animals (pseudohermaphroditism in horses, testicular hypoplasia in he-goats, intersexuality in pigs, freemartinism and genital infantilism in cattle). Also, the use of the cytogenetic test in genetic prophylaxis in pigs and cattle was shown. In addition, the methods for detecting genitors with undesirable genes were devised and perspectives for the development of hereditary hygiene discussed.

The research illuminates the results of genetic studies carried out in Romania on reproductive pathology in domestic animals, while also discussing methodologies for identifying undesirable genes and prospects for enhancing inherited hygiene.
Results of Genetic Studies
- The research explores various genetic conditions impacting the reproductive systems of several types of livestock including horses, goats, pigs, and cattle. These conditions range from pseudohermaphroditism in horses to freemartinism and genital infantilism in cattle, which affect the animals’ ability to breed successfully.
- The authors presented the detailed findings of these studies, demonstrating the nature and extent of such conditions in Romania’s livestock population. This insight is critical for local farmers, veterinarians, and policymakers aiming to maintain a healthy and productive livestock population.
Use of Cytogenetic Tests
- The study also demonstrated the application of a cytogenetic test in genetic prophylaxis for pigs and cattle. This test helps in early detection and prevention of genetic diseases, helping to sustain the health and productivity of these animals.
- By implementing these tests efficiently, the researchers suggest that it could be possible to significantly reduce the incidence of these disorders in Romania’s livestock industry, bolstering its productivity and profitability.
Detecting Undesirable Genes
- Alongside this, the paper outlined methods for identifying parents or ‘genitors’ carrying undesirable genes which might lead to these genetic conditions. This can potentially assist in containing the spread of these diseases by avoiding breeding from these animals.
- The findings have significant implications for the selection and breeding strategies of these animals, as well as for the broader management of genetic health within Romania’s livestock industry.
Hereditary Hygiene
- The authors also discussed the prospective enhancements for hereditary hygiene, which is the preservation of the health of future generations of livestock by avoiding the propagation of harmful genetic conditions.
- Improved hereditary hygiene could result in a healthier livestock population, which would generally be more productive and could have a longer productive lifespan.
