Haemorrhagic nasal polyps of the horse.
Abstract: A series of 10 haemorrhagic polyps of the equine nasal cavity is described. The lesions show haematoma formation, abundant haemosiderin in macrophages and giant cells, and organising fibrous tissue. In one case, angiomatoid lesions were observed in the mucous membrane of the paranasal sinuses and it is suggested that some haemorrhagic nasal polyps may originate from pre-existing haemangiomatous areas in the respiratory mucosa.

The research examines a series of 10 cases of haemorrhagic nasal polyps in horses, involving formation of hematomas, abundant presence of haemosiderin, and developing fibrous tissue. It implies that some polyps may stem from pre-existing areas showing blood vessel growth in the respiratory mucosa.
Polyp Examination
- The focus of the research is an examination of haemorrhagic nasal polyps in horses. The researchers conduct a thorough investigation of 10 significant cases.
- The polyps being dealt with are unique as they depict the formation of hematomas. Hematomas are a collection of blood outside of a blood vessel, indicating clear signs of internal bleeding or swelling.
- Besides this, the researchers observed an abundance of haemosiderin in these polyps. Haemosiderin is a form of iron storage complex found usually within macrophages, which are an integral part of the immune system. The high presence of haemosiderin changes the usual matrix composition and possibly alters the cellular interactions within the polyp.
- Alongside the hematoma formation and haemosiderin, the lesions showed the introduction of fibrous tissue which was still in the organising stages. This indicates a relatively advanced stage of the polyp and signals ongoing processes of repair or fibrotic transformation.
Origins of Haemorrhagic Nasal Polyps
- The research also delves into the possible origins of these haemorrhagic nasal polyps. In a particular case, the researchers observed angiomatoid lesions on the mucous membrane of the paranasal sinuses. An angiomatoid lesion is a lesion that mimics the growth of a benign tumour constituted by blood vessels, also known as a hemangioma.
- The presence of such lesions leads the authors to suggest that some haemorrhagic nasal polyps may originate from pre-existing angiomatous areas in the respiratory mucosa. This would mean that certain areas showing abnormal blood vessel growth may serve as a basis for the formation of these polyps, highlighting a possible pathogenic mechanism.
