[Health aspects and the duty of care in the rearing of young horses].
Abstract: Future competition horses may suffer from health impairments due to complex or partial genetic components as well as to management faults in respects to keeping, feeding and health prophylaxis against infectious diseases. This health risks exist during the whole rearing period: from late pregnancy till far beyond weaning. Health impairments reduce trade value and practical use, and interfere with aspects of animal protection. In the field of breeding permission, first in stallions, applied research ist needed. For horse farms a praxis-oriented comprehensive advisory service should be established.

The abstract is summarizing a research study that explores the potential health issues and needs related to the rearing of young horses, particularly those destined for competition.
Research Context
- This research revolves around young competition horses, specifically the potential health impairments they might suffer due to their genetic makeup as well as management errors, such as inadequate feeding, housing or insufficient preventative health measures against infectious diseases.
Rearing Period and its Risks
- The study distinguishes the duration from late pregnancy until far beyond the weaning stage as the rearing period, during which there are significant health risks.
- These health impairments don’t only depreciate the horse’s commercial value and practical use, but also raise concerns regarding animal protection rights.
Need for Applied Research and Advisory Services
- The author of the research asserts a need for applied research in this field, particularly for stallions. Applied research focuses on finding pragmatic and actionable solutions to existing problems. As such, it would not only look into genetic factors and breeding permissions, but also delve into how to mitigate potential management mishaps.
- Moreover, the authors call for a practical, comprehensive advisory service for horse farms. This would guide them in maintaining appropriate conditions for the horses, ensuring their well-being and preventing health issues that might arise due to inadequate care.
