Heart valve pathology in regularly slaughtered horses.
Abstract: In this study we examined macroscopic and microscopic lesions in the mitral valves of 50 regularly slaughtered horses in Italy. Macroscopically the results were minor. Microscopic lesions to the valve were found in both young and elderly subjects, confirming that there is no correlation between age and onset of lesions. We set out to evaluate whether the lesions correspond to valve disorder during the life of the animal.

This research article investigates physical abnormalities (both visible and microscopic) found in the heart valves of horses, aiming to determine if there’s any correlation between the horse’s age and the onset of these abnormalities, and evaluating whether these deviations indicate heart valve disorders during the horse’s life.
Objective and Methodology of the Study
- The objective of the study was to examine visible (macroscopic) and microscopic lesions in the heart’s mitral valves from 50 horses that were regularly slaughtered in Italy. The research aimed to determine if there’s any connection between the age of the horse and the onset of these lesions. Further, the study strived to assess whether the identified lesions indicate the presence of valve disorders during the horse’s lifespan.
- The methodology employed involved an autopsy of the horses and microscopic examination of the heart’s mitral valves to gain insights into the nature and frequency of lesions. The data collected were then analysed to draw any inferences about age correlation and implications for heart health.
Key Findings
- The researchers found that macroscopic results or visible lesions in the mitral valves of the examined horses were minimal, suggesting that these lesions aren’t easily noticeable without microscopic examination.
- Microscopic examination revealed the presence of lesions in both young and elderly horses, supporting the assumption that these lesions’ onset is unrelated to age.
- The evaluation of the potential correlation between these lesions and heart valve disorders during the horse’s life was hinted at but ultimately left unanswered.
Implications for Future Research
- Despite providing critical insights into the occurrence of lesions in horses’ mitral valves, the study leaves room for further research to conclusively establish the link, if any, between these lesions and heart valve disorders during the horses’ lifetime.
- This could pave the way for early diagnosis and treatment procedures in the future, thereby enhancing the lifespan and quality of life of the horses.
