Heritability of hair whorl position on the forehead in Konik horses.
Abstract: There are studies on the relationship between the position and shape of hair whorls on bovine forehead and phenotypic traits. According to anecdotal beliefs by horse users and handlers, temperamental traits may be related to the position of hair whorls in horses. No previous research on the mechanisms of inheritance of hair whorls has been performed, so the aim of the present study was to determine the heritability of the position of the hair whorl on the forehead of Konik horses. The horses (n = 362) were classified into five groups based on the whorl position on forehead with respect to the top and bottom eye lines. The estimated heritability of hair whorl position was 0.753 (SE = 0.056). Heritability adjusted for the discontinuity of the trait was 0.836. The results show that hair whorl position in Konik Polski horses is highly heritable. The possible relationship between position of hair whorls on the forehead and other morphological traits needs further research and should be interpreted with caution.

The research conducted seeks to understand the inheritability of the position of hair whorls on the foreheads of a specific horse breed called Konik. With an estimated heritability index of around 0.753, the study concludes that the position of these hair whorls is highly inheritable.
Research Goals
- The main aim of this research was to establish whether the position of hair whorls on the foreheads of Konik horses could be inherited.
- The study attempted to link anecdotal beliefs that hair whorl positions might be associated with temperamental traits in horses. However, this hypothesis requires further research for confirmation.
Methodology
- The researchers enlisted 362 Konik horses for this study, categorizing them into five different groups based on the position of the hair whorl in relation to the top and bottom lines of the eyes.
Findings
- The researchers established that the heritability of the position of hair whorls is approximately 0.753. Adjusted for discontinuity of the trait, the heritability was around 0.836. High heritability estimates indicate that most of the variability in trait position is due to genetic factors.
Implications
- The study reaffirms the idea that hair whorl positions on a horse’s forehead are mostly driven by genetics.
- Although not conclusively proven in this study, the researchers point to a potential link between hair whorl positions and various morphological traits, which could be of significant interest to horse breeders and handlers. However, they urge that these links should be interpreted with caution until further research is conducted.
Conclusions
- The study concludes that hair whorl positions in Konik Polski horses are highly heritable, indicating a strong genetic influence in this trait.
- The potential links between the position of hair whorls and other morphological or temperamental traits need further investigation.
