• The researchers tracked the age (in days) at which routine hoof trimming removed the initial hoof ring from newborn thoroughbred foals. This ring, which is formed at birth, grows downwards to the distal border as the initial fetal hoof is replaced.

Findings

• The average age at which the initial (fetal) hoof was removed was 145 days (with a range of 120 to 165 days and a confidence interval of 95% between 141.8 and 147.2 days).
• This means that thoroughbred foals replaced their initial hoof almost twice as fast as mature horses, who take between 270 and 365 days to replace their hooves.
